Data Easy In, Insights Easy Out
The value of an ERP platform is defined by how easily businesses can input data and generate critical insights. That’s the focus of the recently announced new features customers can look forward to in the 2025 Release Wave 1 for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
To determine what goes into the bi-annual releases, Microsoft prioritizes requests from customers and responds to market trends. For example, during the last couple of releases, Microsoft invested in multi-company capabilities. That’s because an increasing number of businesses use Business Central across borders to manage multiple companies.
Microsoft has also committed in recent years to enhancing user experiences by integrating Copilot AI capabilities. These functions significantly boost productivity across financial data-entry tasks and provide managers with key insights.
In 2025, the Business Central ERP platform and supporting solutions on AppSource are now available to serve customers in more than 170 countries across the globe. In countries where Microsoft manages localization, they also provide updates for regulatory features.
In this blog, we provide a rundown of the key new functionality in Business Central to look for between April and September of this year with Release Wave 1. As you will see, users can leverage enhanced auto-fill capabilities and summarized intelligence that’s tailored to their roles.
Artificial Intelligence Automates More Workflows
Release Wave 1 expands on the use of Copilot AI capabilities by enabling non-technical users to orchestrate and automate business processes with help from AI agents. The agents autonomously perform tasks, respond to events, analyze data, and handle errors—using user inputs and contextualized data from Business Central.
The agents operate with minimal manual intervention, involving users only when needed. The agents can also act on behalf of a company, department, or team while maintaining transparency and bringing users into the loop when their attention is required. As an example, the pre-built Sales Order Agent automates the end-to-end process of capturing sales quotes and orders from customer emails.
Tax and Currency Management Simplified
Accounting teams can also use expanded Copilot features to streamline data entry. This includes automating routine tasks and accessing AI-driven insights to accelerate decision-making.
Microsoft will also improve the handling of currencies and VAT by providing multicurrency support and refining VAT management to comply with international regulations. In addition, Microsoft is integrating advanced analytics and reporting features to give users deeper insights into their financial data.
Streamlined E-Commerce and E-Documents
Microsoft continues to enhance Business Central integration with Shopify to streamline business-to-business e-commerce. For example, customers can now efficiently manage planning, procurement, and product costs while gaining control over inventory levels across locations and item variants. Integrating these two apps also simplifies defining prices and discounts as well as managing and reporting taxes.
In the e-documents realm, Business Central streamlines sending and receiving documents by reducing manual data entry, which minimizes errors. Additionally, Business Central protects sensitive information in e-documents with enhanced security controls.
Integrated Internal and External Data Fuels Analysis
The Microsoft reporting strategy revolves around building universal business intelligence analytics into Business Central. This includes seamlessly integrating in-context, rich, and immersive intelligence and analytics content from third-party data sources. Alongside flexible self-service capabilities, users can also effortlessly access and leverage internal data.
For example, full-text searches on lists, drill-downs, and look-ups provide faster, more accurate access to key data by focusing on relevant columns for targeted results. This improvement reduces search times and delivers precise, actionable information.
Help for Reducing Carbon Emissions
For sustainability management programs, customers can use journals in Business Central to gather carbon emissions data. Customers can track emissions for each business unit, country, region, or facility. They can also purchase carbon credits directly and import emission factors from external sources to ensure accurate calculations.
The updated sustainability Role Center in Business Central monitors all sustainability information and various KPIs:
· Track progress against baselines and targets with goal scorecards.
· Leverage standard Business Central or Excel reports for analysis of sustainability entries.
· Customize reports to focus on specific sustainability metrics relevant to your business.
· Generate tailored insights for unique sustainability objectives and reporting requirements.
These capabilities make it easier to compare sustainability entries with statistical or general ledger entries and report different greenhouse gases or CO2 equivalents. These comprehensive sustainability management tools enable you to efficiently track, analyze, and report on your environmental impact.
More Efficient Software Development
Software developers who modify Business Central or integrate the platform with third-party applications will discover several new capabilities with Release Wave 1:
· Customize and modify user profiles without duplicating code.
· Define profile extension objects.
· Include resources in extensions.
· Access resources within the application language to streamline data initialization and setup.
· Access GitHub repositories to easily pull, inspect, and hotfix code versions—even with IP protection.
· Use full-text metadata searches in table fields for faster, more accurate results.
· Validate integrated solutions by running multiple AppSource apps through a public NuGet feed.
Developers can also run background profiling to pinpoint and address performance issues—with a rule-based scheduling mode for performance profiling that reduces troubleshooting time. In addition to enhancing productivity and bringing new services to users faster, these capabilities help developers maintain code integrity.
Data Governance and System Administration Improvements
Other IT teams will also see new capabilities in Release Wave 1. These include new features in Business Central to improve security and partner management for multi-environment customers. IT system administrators can easily assign partner access to specific environments to simplify control and compliance while encryption keys enhance data protection to align with privacy standards.
In addition, extended update windows provide flexibility in scheduling upgrades during convenient times. A unified interface for managing per-tenant extensions alongside AppSource apps streamlines deployment across environments. Meanwhile, IPv6 support future-proofs connectivity, ensures seamless service, and enhances data security.
